Workforce Development - New Director Mentor Program
The New Director Mentor Program offers a bridge for new MCH professionals to connect with seasoned MCH professionals who are willing to share their knowledge about what state Title V programs actually do. To accomplish this, the program will assist new directors by providing technical assistance with program activities, network opportunities to learn from their peers and access to resources on MCH and MCH leadership.
History
AMCHP initiated the New Director Mentor Program in 1996 with support from a cooperative agreement with the Maternal and Child Health Bureau of the Health Resources and Services Administration. The program is part of AMCHP’s workforce development efforts to create strategies that help Title V MCH and CSHCN directors in their daily jobs and identify issues that state Title V programs face in recruiting, training and retaining staff.
Objectives
- Provide technical assistance for new directors and their staff.
- Provide opportunities for new directors to receive mentorship from seasoned MCH
professionals.
- Provide information resources including the Guide for Senior Managers and CAST V.
Eligibility
The program is designed to assist the new Title V director. To be eligible for the program, a new
director must be within the first 3 years tenure. The Title V staff working under a new director
can also be eligible. Title V MCH and CSHCN directors with 5 years tenure are eligible to serve
as a mentor. Interested directors must complete an application to initiate the process.
New Director Identification
AMCHP monitors the staff turnover of MCH and CSHCN directors for every state. The program
manager can receive information through: direct notification from the director or the Title V
supervisor, AMCHP staff, MCHB staff, regional meeting reports, committee meeting reports and
by monitoring the member profile updates on AMCHP’s web site.
New Director Notification
To inform a new director about the program, within the first four months that the director is in
their new role, the project manager will send an information packet that includes: a welcome
letter from the AMCHP CEO and president and an application. Also, a copy of the welcome
packet will be sent to the new director’s immediate supervisor.
Application Process
When the new director is ready to become involved in the program, a completed application is
returned to the program manager via email attachment, fax or regular mail. The application can
also be downloaded from the New Director Mentor Program web page. The application is
reviewed and then the project manager will setup a phone interview to assess the current or
future needs of the new director.
