This issue brief discusses the significant barriers women of reproductive age with mental health and substance use disorders face in rural communities to achieve good health. Social determinants such as rising unemployment, unreliable transportation, food insecurity, inadequate housing, low rates of health insurance coverage, and deteriorating economies play a significant role in health outcomes. Additionally, rural health providers are under increasing pressure to change their approach to delivering care while grappling with acute workforce shortages and decreasing revenue. Historical legacies of racial oppression also perpetuate stigmatization of racial/ethnic minorities and increase health disparities in rural communities.
