MCH Training and Leadership Development Programs

AMCHP New Director Mentor Program

The AMCHP New Director Mentor Program matches seasoned MCH leaders with new state directors to help orient new directors to their roles.  The program provides support for new director-mentor conference calls, a site visit to observe how a Title V program works in another state, and on-going training and professional development for new directors.  For more information on the New Director Mentor Program, contact AMCHP staff.

MCH Leadership Competencies

The MCH Leadership Competencies Version 2.0 draw from both theory and practice and are designed to support and promote MCH leadership. The competencies target MCH interdisciplinary training programs and practicing MCH professionals. The MCH leadership competencies can be used in a variety of ways including:

1. Frame training objectives for the MCH Leadership Training Programs.
2. Measure and evaluate leadership and training for leadership.
3. Cultivate and measure competencies within the current MCH workforce.
4. Sustain and grow MCH leadership throughout the health care system.

The development of the leadership competencies has been thorough, comprehensive, and inclusive. These competencies are the result of an iterative and inclusive work-in-progress that was based on the literature on leadership (from the business, military, and social science contexts), and the wisdom and experience of current MCH participants and leaders.

MCH Leadership Institute

The Maternal and Child Leadership Skills Training Institute began in 1984 and held its first training session in September 1985. Previously based at San Diego State University and the University of Minnesota, and currently based at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the MCH Training Institute offers continuing education and training to increase leadership skills for key management personnel in State Title V Maternal and Child Health and Children with Special Health Care Needs (CSHCN) programs in the United States.

Specific areas of training include planning, needs assessment, evaluation, quality assurance, inter-agency collaboration, communication, negotiation, organizational behavior, conflict resolution, advocacy, budget, funding, contracting, use of consultants and technical assistance, program and policy development, core public health functions, resource development and cultural competence.

The MCH Leadership Skills Training Institute offers two different curricula. Each curriculum is offered once or twice during each project year (October 1 - September 30). The two curricula are Planning, Implementing and Evaluating Programs (PIE), and Systems. The PIE institute focuses on leadership issues related to internal agency/program functions, while the Systems institute focuses on issues related to assuring the well being of MCH/CSHCN populations while working with other agencies.
