In the United States, 9.4 million children, or almost 13 percent, have special health care needs. These children have or are at increased risk for chronic conditions, and many require extensive health services. As a national advocate for family health, AMCHP ensures that these children receive high quality, family-centered and integrated health services. We work with national and state partners to link children and youth with special health care needs (CYSHCN) to appropriate services.
State Title V CYSHCN programs have decades of experience in creating and sustaining systems of care for CYSHCN and their families. State CYSHCN programs ensure family-centered, community-based coordinated care for children with chronic conditions and disabilities. They have strong connections to pediatric specialists and the best data on the needs of CYSHCN and their families.
With support from the Maternal and Child Health Bureau, Health Resources and Services Administration, AMCHP assists families and state CYSHCN programs with policy and legislative analysis, research, coordination of national meetings and publications.
