In the United States, 9.4 million children, or almost 13 percent, have special health care needs. These children have or are at increased risk for chronic conditions, and many require extensive health services. As a national advocate for family health, the (AMCHP ensures that these children receive high quality, family-centered and integrated health services. We work with national and state partners to link children with special needs to appropriate services.
State CSHCN programs have decades of experience in creating and sustaining systems of care for children with special health care needs and their families. Children with special health care needs have or are at increased risk for a chronic condition and require significant health services.
State CSHCN programs ensure family-centered, community-based coordinated care for children with chronic conditions and disabilities. They have strong connections to pediatric specialists and the best data on the needs of these children and their families.
With support from the Maternal and Child Health Bureau, Health Resources and Services Administration, AMCHP assists families and state CSHCN programs with policy and legislative analysis, research, coordination of national meetings, and publications.
