15th Annual MCH EPI Conference
Data Skill Trainings
December 7-8, 2009

The trainings are held immediately preceding the 15th Annual CDC MCH EPI Conference scheduled for December 9-11, 2009. The the training workshops and the MCH EPI Conference will both be held at the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay Hotel.
Training Workshops
The following four trainings will take place prior to the MCH EPI Conference:

2. Practical Approaches to State MCH Data Records Linkage Practice: Supporting Policy and Programs [training description | selection criteria]
3. Communicating Epidemiology Research Results Effectively to Intended Audiences [training description | selection criteria]
4. Concentration in Basic Geospatial Methods for Public Health Professionals [training description | selection criteria]
Goals of the Trainings
Provide skills trainings on analyzing and reporting, linking data records, communicating research data results and information to effectively inform programs and policy and GIS.
The target audience includes epidemiologists, statisticians and other MCH professionals working in state and local public health agencies.
Application and Registration Process
Information on the pre-conference trainings is available on the CityMatCH, CDC, and MCHB websites, However the, application and registration forms for trainings #2-4 (sponsored by AMCHP) is only available below. There is no registration fee to attend these data skills trainings.
Step 1: Click here to complete the application form for trainings #2-4. All applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. E.T. on October 30, 2009. Applications will not be accepted after this date.
Step 2: Applications will be reviewed. Participants will be notified of selection via e-mail during the week of November 6, 2009.
Selection Criteria for Participation
Applications for trainings #2-4 will be considered based on the following criteria:
A) General selection criteria for Approaches to State MCH Data Records Linkage Practice: Supporting Policy and Programs and Communicating Epidemiology Research Results Effectively to Intended Audiences
- The trainings are designed for senior and middle level state and local MCH program and public health professionals who are knowledgeable about state and national MCH programs and have a working understanding of the importance of data in informing programs and policies.
- Attendees may or may not have experience with datasets, but are involved in designing policies and programs and making MCH decisions.
- Attendees may or may not currently be performing data activities such as data linkages using multiple datasets (e.g., vital statistics, WIC, Medicaid, hospital discharge, disease registry), but are responsible for overseeing data collection, analysis and translation activities at the state and local public health agency.
B) General selection criteria for Concentration in basic Geospatial Methods for Public Health Professionals training
- GIS Training assumes little or no previous knowledge of GIS and should be considered no more than an introduction to what GIS software can do. The workshop is aimed at public health professionals who work in public health agencies.
A maximum of thirty five (35) participants will be selected to attend the Practical Approaches to State MCH Data Records Linkage Practice: Supporting Policy and Programs and the Communicating Epidemiology Research Results Effectively to Intended Audiences courses. A maximum of twenty (20) participants will be selected to attend the Concentration in Basic Geospatial Methods for Public Health Professionals. Please note: To avoid training overlap, each applicant will only be allowed to enroll in one training since all workshops will take place at the same time. All attendees are encouraged to consult with their MCH/CSHCN Director or supervisor prior to applying.
Depending on the course, selection criteria will depend on several factors. It will not be limited to regional representation, working understanding of the importance of data in informing programs and policies, working with datasets, performing data linkages using multiple datasets and knowledge of GIS. Due to limited space, all applicants may not be accepted.
Training Scholarships
Partial training scholarships to help defer travel expenses of up to $400.00 are available from AMCHP for trainings #2-4 only. Since scholarship funds are limited, participants are encouraged to seek support from their agencies before applying for financial support. Individuals wishing to request a scholarship should complete the scholarship portion of the application form before 5 p.m. E.T. on October 30, 2009. Please note: the submission of an application does not guarantee automatic receipt of scholarship.
Reimbursement Form
The scholarship recipients are required to use their own funds and submit a travel reimbursement form (which will be provided at the training) and receipts to AMCHP. AMCHP will reimburse participants within thirty (30) days of receiving a reimbursement request.
