Congress in Recess
Congress is in recess during the month of August. During this month, AMCHP staff is focused on gathering information about the impact of sequestration so we are prepared to articulate the impact and urge Congress to replace the sequester with a balanced approach to deficit reduction without further cuts to discretionary programs. HHS Launches Training Website

Second Federal Register Notice Announced from HRSA
In the final step before the release of the survey, the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) issued a notice in the Federal Register on Aug. 8 announcing a submission of an information collection request (ICR) to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for review and comment. HHS Announces Pregnancy Assistance Fund Grantees
On Jul. 29, the HHS Office of Adolescent Health (OAH) announced the grantees for the Pregnancy Assistance Fund (PAF). Through 17 grants, $21,599,475 was awarded, “to states and tribes to improve the lives of expectant and parenting teens, women, fathers, and their families.” [more

Navigator Funding Announced for Federally Facilitated and State Partnership Marketplaces
On Aug. 15, HHS announced the award of $67 million to 105 navigator grantees in states where there will be a federally facilitated or a state partnership marketplace. [more

Champions for Coverage
HHS also announced that over 100 national organizations and businesses have volunteered to become “Champions for Coverage” to help Americans learn about the ACA and insurance coverage. [more]

Coordination of ACA and Title V Toll-Free Phone Services
Finally, HHS recently established a consumer help center to support the enrollment of individuals and families in new health insurance coverage options created by the ACA. [more]

CDC would like to announce the launch of their free digital library of scientific publications, Stacks, which includes peer reviewed articles and CDC guidelines and recommendations. [more]

Center for Health Care Transition Improvement is the New GotTransition?
The Maternal and Child Health Bureau has granted a five-year award to The National Alliance to Advance Adolescent Health to operate the new Center for Health Care Transition Improvement. [more]

2013 Performance Measurement TA Webinar Series Archives Now Available
The Division of MCH Workforce Development (DMCHWD) launched a technical assistance (TA) webinar series for MCH training program directors and data coordinators that focused on the importance of performance report data in demonstrating program impact, communicating how performance measure data is used by DMCHWD, consistent TA across DMCHWD programs for performance report submissions and providing an opportunity for targeted Q&A with DMCHWD staff. CDC Foundation Launches Heads Up to Parents Website
The CDC Foundation released a new website, which also includes a mobile app, that provides resources and tools for parents and coaches who play a key role in keeping children and adolescents safe from concussions and other serious brain injuries. [more]

CDC Seeks Individuals for National Ad Campaign
CDC is now recruiting both “real people” who have suffered severe health conditions directly caused by smoking or individuals who have lost a family member due to smoking for their national tobacco education campaign. All genders and populations are welcomed to apply. Compensation will be provided and travel expenses paid. [more]

Recent years have brought an increased focus on the value and necessity of investing in programs that demonstrate evidence of producing desired outcomes. To provide on-going support for “taking what works and applying it,” AMCHP, in partnership with Community Guide staff at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is thrilled to announce the AMCHP-CDC Skills-Building Suite: Evidence-Based Programs: Moving Along the Continuum from Selection to Sustainability.   • On Aug. 1, AMCHP staff Piia Hanson attended the United States Breastfeeding Committee meeting on “Advancing Continuity of Breastfeeding Care for All” in Arlington, VA. This meeting brought together a diverse group of stakeholders to meet the following objectives: understand the current state of the continuity of breastfeeding care in the United States and the impact and costs of the lack of continuity of care; celebrate and highlight the many contributions that have already been made in this area and learn about current and ongoing activities and investments...   • On Aug. 14, AMCHP staff Tegan Callahan and Brent Ewig attended the Region X Life Course Academy in Seattle, WA. Tegan participated in a panel presentation on Life Course Metrics, presenting an Overview of State MCH Life Course Measures and both Tegan and Brent participated in dialog sessions with Region X Title V programs on how to advance life course from theory to practice. Perinatal & Infant Oral Health Quality Improvement Program Grant
Deadline: Aug. 19
The purpose of this grant is to integrate a successful community-based approach into a health care system with statewide reach, accomplishing statewide availability and increased utilization of quality preventive dental care and restorative services for pregnant women and infants most at risk. American Indians into Nursing Grant
Deadline: Aug. 19
The purpose of this grant is to augment the number of Registered Nurses, Certified Nurse Midwives, Nurse Practitioners and Certified Nurse Anesthetists who deliver health care services to AI/AN communities. [more]

Competitive Abstinence Education Grant Program Grant
Deadline: Aug. 29
This grant will provide funding for additional tools to address the rates of teen pregnancy among adolescent youth who are at greatest risk of STDs/STIs and most likely to bear children out of wedlock. Program plans will focus on the social, psychological, and health gains to be realized by delaying initiation of sexual activity and engaging in healthy relationships. [more]

Regional Nutrition and Physical Activity Programs Grant
Deadline: Sept. 15
Grants of up to $40,000 will be awarded by the Aetna Foundation for programs that target communities where healthy food can be difficult to buy, and where social and environmental factors may limit people's ability to be physically active. [more]

Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Research Centers Grant
Deadline: Sept. 16, Letters of Intent due Aug. 9
This grant supports a network of Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Research Centers (PRCs) to conduct applied public health prevention research. [more]

Fahs-Beck Fund for Research and Experimentation Seeks Applications for Mental Health Research
Deadline: Nov. 1
Grants of up to $20,000 will be awarded to support research of interventions designed to prevent or improve major social, psychological, behavioral, or public health problems affecting children, adults, couples, families or communities. [more]
