AMCHP Staff Attends an ACOG/CDC Maternal Mortality Meeting
AMCHP staff Jessica Hawkins attended the ACOG/CDC Maternal Mortality Special Interest Group meeting, which convened nation and international leaders to discuss rates of maternal mortality and moving surveillance forward. Experts from states and other organizations presented on maternal mortality data and reviewed processes and putting data to action. Additionally, U.S. Rep. John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI) provided an overview of the Maternal Health Accountability Act of 2011 (H.R. 894).
AMCHP Team Marches for Babies
On May 7, a group of AMCHP staff, friends and family members walked together as part of AMCHP’s team, AMCHP Steps for Babies to raise awareness of prematurity and support our partners at the March of Dimes Maryland-National Capital Area Chapter. Through AMCHP’s efforts through the walk and the mini-March for Babies at the AMCHP Annual Conference, AMCHP has raised over $1,000. AMCHP Participates in Southeast Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit Meeting
AMCHP staff Jessica Hawkins participated in the Southeast Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit meeting on prenatal environmental health effects in maternal and child health populations. This group, attended by representatives from the Environmental Protection Agency, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Emory University, and other national and state organizations, discussed environmental contributions to disparities in pregnancy outcomes and explored opportunities for addressing these exposures through the collaboration of programs and policies.
ASTHO-Supported Regional Meeting in Alabama
On May 5, AMCHP CEO Mike Fraser attended an ASTHO-supported regional meeting of Regions IV and VI State Health Officials in Alabama. The goal of the meeting was to discuss regional plans to address infant mortality and improve maternal health outcomes. Mike will be following up with ASTHO and Title V leaders in regions IV and VI about next steps.
AMCHP Visits Denver, Colorado
On May 12, AMCHP CEO Mike Fraser visited Denver and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment to present on health reform to MCH/CYSHCN.
AMCHP Participates in an Adolescent Health, Teen-Parent Communication Meeting
AMCHP staff Cristina Sciuto attended a meeting on May 11 that the Office of Adolescent Health hosted, “Teen-Parent Communication: Building a Campaign,” to gather best practices in teen-parent communication to inform the campaign as it moves forward. Facilitated discussions around how to address barriers in engaging and motivating parents in these conversations were held.
