E-LEARNING IN MCH
Bringing Education and Information to the Workforce

E-learning (learning conducted via electronic media) has become commonplace as the internet has evolved. This has not only increased access to information; it has also provided more freedom in how and where learning takes place. The public health field, and specifically the maternal and child health (MCH) field, has adopted a variety of e-learning mechanisms (such as webinars) to educate, engage, and empower its workforce. STATES EXPLORE TEXT APP TO REACH LOW-INCOME PREGNANT WOMEN

Text4baby is a service that sends free, personalized text messages to expecting mothers three times a week, including nutrition and safe sleep tips, doctor visit and appointment reminders, breastfeeding advice, health insurance information, and urgent health alerts. Last year, AMCHP and a representative from Oklahoma's Text4baby project, located in Innovation Station, provided technical assistance (TA) to states to institute or expand the service, which is operated by Zero to Three and Wellpass (formerly Voxiva). [more]

HOW DAWNS BUILDS ON SUCCESS OF PH WINS

PH WINS provided the individual perspective of the workforce – what staff members think about their agency and workforce needs. The missing perspective is a systematic view from leadership, and what they think are the most substantial needs among their employees. To fill this gap, ASTHO began fielding the Directors Assessment of Workforce Needs Survey (DAWNS) this week. [more]

yellow small.jpgHOW REVIEW TO ACTION IS A CATALYST FOR MCH SUCCESS TO IMPROVE MATERNAL MORTALITY RATES

If you ever took organic chemistry, you probably learned about catalysts. Without getting too into the weeds (and apologies to any chemistry majors out there), catalysts help move a process along. In some cases, the process might not happen at all without the catalyst, or it might happen at a much slower rate. [more]

FROM THE PRESIDENT
Why Maternal & Child Health Reminds Me of Gardening

It turns out that being an maternal and child health (MCH) leader is a lot like being a gardener. The ultimate harvest is a healthy and thriving MCH population. But a key ingredient in getting there is a robust MCH workforce. Here are some thoughts on how to further develop your "green thumb" and support your own MCH workforce to be the best that it can be. [more]

FROM THE CEO

We also recognized early in the process that alternate work schedules are viable work options that, when appropriately applied, benefit both the organization and the individual. Alternate work schedules are cooperative arrangements between an employee and AMCHP, not an entitlement, and are primarily based on AMCHP's needs, the employee's ability to effectively perform the duties of his/her position in an alternate work schedule, the nature of the employee's position, and the employee's performance. [more]
