Meet Our New National Public Leaders

Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius is President’s Pick for Secretary of Health and Human Services

As reported on Monday, March 2, Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius has been nominated by President Obama to lead the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) which includes critical agencies related to maternal and child health such as the Health Resources and Services Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Administration for Children and Families, and several others. Prior to her election as Governor, Sebelius was insurance commissioner for the State of Kansas. AMCHP will monitor Governor Sebelius’ confirmation proceedings and report her confirmation status in upcoming Member Briefs. It is expected Governor Sibelius will be confirmed sometime later this month.

AMCHP Welcomes New HRSA Administrator Dr. Mary Wakefield

AMCHP is pleased to welcome Dr. Mary Wakefield to Washington, DC as the new Administrator for the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). Dr. Wakefield comes to our nation’s capital from her home state of North Dakota, where she was most recently associate dean for rural health and director of the Center for Rural Health at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences. No stranger to living “inside the Beltway,” Dr. Wakefield previously served as chief of staff to two United States Senators, Senators Quentin Burdick and Kent Conrad. The HRSA Administrator is a key position in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), as HRSA is a sister agency to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and other major Federal health agencies. The HRSA Administrator position is also a key position for AMCHP as the Associate Administrator for the Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) reports directly to the HRSA Administrator. President Obama appointed Dr. Wakefield on February 20, 2009 saying, "As a nurse, a Ph.D., and a leading rural healthcare advocate, Mary Wakefield brings expertise that will be instrumental in expanding and improving services for those who are currently uninsured or underserved." AMCHP looks forward to meeting with Dr. Wakefield, updating her on the work of Title V and state maternal and child health programs, and offering whatever help and assistance we can as she leads this vital agency forward.
