Best Practices Overview

What is a Best Practice?
AMCHP defines “best practices” as a continuum of practices, programs and policies that range from emerging to promising to those that have been extensively evaluated and proven effective, i.e. best practice.  A best practice could focus on the health of women, adolescents, young children, families, or children with special health care needs. Best practice focus areas include preconception care, mental health, data and assessment, financing, program and system integration, workforce development, injury prevention, emergency preparedness, family involvement, or other public health issues.

For example, a best practice may:

  • Improve care coordination for children and youth with special health care needs
  • Reduce lead poisoning through home visits
  • Develop an interagency application process for WIC, Early Intervention and Medicaid
  • Collaborate with school nurses to improve care for children with asthma
  • Reduce the rate of adolescent suicide
  • Promote early intervention for at-risk children
  • Build linkages between health and child care systems
  • Expand screening and intervention for depression in pregnant women
  • Link data to address infant mortality

How are Best Practices Selected?
The Best Practices Review Panel, composed of AMCHP members, partners, and other experts in the public health field will review submissions and determine if a practice meets the designated criteria. Typically, new submissions are reviewed twice per year (winter and spring).

For more explanation of AMCHP's best practices concept, review the Common Terms & Definitions.
